ANISE STEVENS BIO
With a Bachelor’s in English Literature from Loyola Marymount and a Master’s of Professional Writing from USC, Anise Stevens is a Los-Angeles based self-taught painter, produced playwright, published essayist and contributing art critic to several publications including Artilleryand AEQAI.
Anise has always been an enthusiast of the arts, but she didn’t pursue painting with regularity until diagnosed with cancer. Just before her 43rdbirthday, Anise learned that she had Stage II Breast Cancer. After undergoing a bilateral mastectomy and six cycles of chemotherapy, she was pronounced NED by her oncologist. Unfortunately, in less than three years, Anise was diagnosed again, this time with Stage IV and metastases to the liver, bones and lungs.
Since, Anise has received seven subsequent lines of chemotherapy. While the physical and emotional difficulties that come with her treatment can be debilitating at times, Anise has found painting a therapeutic outlet and motivator to persevere with inspired resilience. Drawing from a range of sources, Anise works in acrylic and ink on canvas. Her influences include the decorative arts from Japan’s Momoyama and Edo Periods and thedesigns of William Morris whose wallpaper and textiles helped shape the British Arts and Crafts Movement.
